Who we are
'Marbles
Reunited' is a new campaign organisation bringing together the many groups
and individuals who share a common aim of reuniting the Parthenon
Sculptures (commonly known as the 'Elgin Marbles') in their original home
city of Athens.
We
are a British-based campaign organisation with our main offices in London.
We are co-ordinating the campaign activities of the many groups and
individuals, including the The
British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM)
and Parthenon 2004, who wish to see the Parthenon Sculptures (including
the sections currently housed in the British Museum and commonly known as
the 'Elgin Marbles') reunited as one work of art in Athens next to the
monument they were an integral part of, the Parthenon.
We believe the Parthenon Sculptures are a work of art that makes sense
only as a whole.
We support the Greek government in their desire to reunite the Parthenon
Sculptures in the new, purpose-built Acropolis Museum currently under
construction in Athens.
We recognise the Greek government has made an imaginative offer to accept
the Parthenon Marbles currently housed in the British Museum on long-term
loan rather than continuing to argue over who should actually own these
sections of the Marbles.
Our campaign seeks a pledge from Prime Minister Tony Blair and the British
Government to accept the Greek offer as the best solution to the long-term
debate
on
the future of the Parthenon Marbles.
We want the British Government to support the reuniting of the
Parthenon Sculptures in Athens.
We feel the time is right for a fresh initiative and bold new approach to
resolving this long- running issue.
2004 is the year in which the Olympic Games return to their original home
in Athens.
2004 should be the year in which Tony Blair and the British Government
confirm that Britain will return the Parthenon Marbles to their original
home in Athens.
2004 should also be the year when the British Museum embrace the
opportunity to collaborate in reuniting this magnificent work of art.
